New Holland, PA – March 15, 2010…Berk-Tek, a Nexans Company, a leading copper and fiber optic cabling manufacturer, announced the introduction of their new 10G Limited Distance (LD) UTP cable, featuring a significant reduction in the cable diameter versus existing category 6A UTP cables.  The Berk-Tek 10G LD cable is designed to support IEEE 802.3an 10GBASE-T to a maximum distance of 60 meters specifically in high density applications such as data centers.

The biggest challenge in producing a reliable UTP cable for 10 Gigabit applications is to assure the elimination of alien crosstalk. Berk-Tek’s new 10G LD cable incorporates several design innovations originally utilized in Berk-Tek’s LANmark-10G2 Category 6A cable, one of the smallest in the industry. “The advantage of Berk-Tek’s 10G LD cable is that it supports 10GBASE-T to 60 meters at a significantly reduced diameter and does not require alien crosstalk testing,” states Jim Frey, Copper Product Manager for Berk-Tek.
Berk-Tek 10G LD meets all IEEE 802.3an channel performance requirements when terminated with Category 6A connectivity -- four connectors to 60 meters and two connectors down to a seven-meter channel. The 10G LD cable also meets all the TIA-568-C.2 internal requirements for Category 6A component compliance (500 MHz) at these distances.
With a diameter of .265”, the new LANmark-10G LD cable is 15% smaller than LANmark-10G2, which can save up to 50% in conduit space. This reduces pathway constriction and facilitates improved air circulation, resulting in lower cooling costs and a reduction in energy consumption. “We are finding that many 10GBASE-T implementations do not require full 100 meter channels,” notes Todd Harpel, Director of Marketing for Berk-Tek. “This cable provides an extremely small cross-sectional area to optimize pathway fill in high density installations like data centers and high performance computing operations,” he adds.
