Berk-Tek and Cree Collaborate to Present Best Practices for Integrating Smart Lighting into the LAN
New Holland, PA– September 26, 2018 – Berk-Tek, a Nexans Company and leading manufacturer of network infrastructure solutions, announced today a smart lighting initiative with Cree, a premier provider of LED smart lighting solutions.
Berk-Tek, along with its connectivity partner Leviton, and Cree have collaborated on an initiative aimed at educating customers on best practices for integrating smart lighting into the LAN. The organizations will co-host a free webinar on October 4, and they have jointly developed a series of technical documents and marketing materials to support this program.
LED lighting has become the preferred technology in schools, hospitals and other enterprise facilities, due to its energy efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. In a smart lighting system, LED light fixtures are connected and powered via the IP network. A single Ethernet cable supplies both data connectivity and low-voltage power to each light fixture via Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology.
“Most people we talk to are familiar with smart lighting,” states Brian Simmons, Copper Product Manager at Berk-Tek. “They’re aware of the energy savings opportunities from LED lighting, they understand PoE, and they’ve heard that there are benefits from integrating lighting into their network. But they’re not sure where to start or what else is possible with this technology. They’re looking for someone to stitch it all together for them. That’s exactly what we will do with this initiative.”
An IP-integrated smart lighting system provides a host of benefits beyond energy savings. For instance, by enabling the integration of other building automation systems and centralizing a building’s control and monitoring functions, an integrated smart lighting system leads to streamlined resource allocation and reduced operating costs.
Arguably the greatest benefit of a smart lighting system is its ability to provide actionable analytics. Cree’s SmartCast® Intelligence Platform analyzes the ambient light and occupancy data collected from a sensor network embedded in the light fixtures, and provides the building manager with recommendations for optimizing space utilization and energy savings.
Drew Kolb, Director of Intelligent Lighting at Cree, adds that “Berk-Tek is a natural fit for us to bring the benefits of this emerging technology to the industry. Cree has developed a sophisticated yet easy-to-use solution that fully leverages the sensor network and analytics platforms incorporated into our system. Berk-Tek provides the high-performance cabling infrastructure needed to connect it all together as well as a certified contractor network (OASIS) to install the solution.”
